The Bellringer: Ringing against Injustice

Friday, March 25, 2022

Dear <<First Name>>,

Much ink has been spilled on social media and even from our bully governor about Lia Thomas, the trans swimmer who has brought the discrimination of even some “allies” to the surface. Instead of posturing my own argument, I ask that you listen to the prophetic words of Rev. M Barclay (pictured below), who also authors our liturgy during the year for worship via enfleshed.com. Here is what they had to say:

Rev. M Barclay“I, too, at times in my life, have publicly engaged in sharing opinions on the matter of other people’s lives and experiences that I knew absolutely nothing about, had not attempted to learn, had not put in any time or energy in even being curious before being sure. I sure regret that. Not only because, how embarrassing, but more importantly – because in my ignorance, I have contributed to furthering harm against others. My ignorance, fear, or arrogance, a mouthpiece for dominance. Imperfectly but earnestly and with seriousness, I try to break this pattern in myself. I wonder how many of those so confidently spouting cruel ignorance about trans people, trans misogyny in the name of feminism, so clearly unresearched, un-invested in integrating what trans people have to say about ourselves and our experiences, so clearly regurgitating the same assumptions that flow from bad talking points and blatant disregard for the truths hidden behind and between all the political posturing happening on our community’s back…I wonder how many will remember and regret this moment, this era, this time of contributing to such violence with so little effort. It’s so easy, isn’t it, to be a part of what kills? Entirely effortless, unfortunately.”

May it be so. Amen.
