The Bellringer: Ringing against Injustice

Friday, April 29, 2022

Dear friend,

As you probably have heard, The United Methodist Church (UMC) is headed for a split. About 20% of churches are planning to splinter off to form a more conservative expression of Methodism, specifically in regards to the continued discrimination of LGBTQ people. This Sunday marks the beginning of this new denomination, the Global Methodist Church (GMC).

Churches will leave in several waves over the next few years. Most UMCs will remain UMC, and with their exit, the denomination that remains will start to look more like Allendale in its practice and beliefs. There are a lot more details I will spare you, but if you are interested, please let me know your questions or concerns. Know that this is the culmination of a 50 year battle over how we love people at the margins, and in many ways, a much longer struggle since the church united following slavery and segregation.

We will continue to be a witness of liberation and do our best to show our denomination and the world what the Kindom of God and Beloved Community can look like. We still have work to do ourselves to arrive there. I am grateful to be on the journey with you.
