Dear friend,
The taking of innocent children and teachers in Uvalde, Texas has brought tears, anger, sadness, rage, and so many questions. This on the heals of Black people killed in a grocery store and Taiwanese-Americans murdered in the church.
We pray for the 19 children and two teachers and their families. We pray for those experiencing trauma, including parents of past shootings, who live with the feelings all over again. We pray for first responders who saw images no one should ever have to see. We pray for the family of the 18-year-old gunman. And we pray our anger at the abdication of responsibility by elected officials. With the Psalmist, we cry out, how long?
One the second anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, we are especially reminded that our prayers must lead to action. It is sinful that our children bear the burden of political calculation and cowardice. We have to pray with our feet to marches, rallies, and to the voting booth.
I call you to join me at Williams Park tomorrow (Saturday May 28) at 7 PM to gather with faith leaders and Moms Demand Action. Allendale’s own Kelly Moore is one of the organizers. (http://bit.ly/StPeteRally)
We will be guided by our anger and questions, but also by hope in the solidarity with one another, that the power of love still has the power to transform.
