The Bellringer: Ringing against Injustice

Friday, July 14, 2023

Dear friend,

International Non-Binary People’s Day graces us every year on July 14. Marking the midpoint between International Men’s Day and International Women’s Day. Gender does not simply fit into binary boxes, but is rather a vibrant and diverse continuum.

We believe that all of humanity is created in the image of God, who is not limited to the traditional binary of male and female. Our expansive Divine Creator is infinitely varied, encompassing all identities and experiences. God is the original They/Them.

Scripture teaches us that each and every person is sacred and holds an intrinsic worth, independent of their gender identity. In our faith, we strive to mirror this divine example of radical inclusion, extending our love and respect to all, while celebrating the sacred worth of our non-binary siblings. Just as our scriptures invite us into transformative love and liberation, we are called to affirm and uphold the identities and experiences of our non-binary family, seeing in them the divine reflection of God’s unlimited diversity and boundless love.

Today, we, as a community rich in diversity, celebrate our own identities, our own strengths, and our unique roles in creating this beautifully varied tapestry of human existence. Non-binary members of our congregation are part of us, shaping and embodying the identity of our collective, enriching us with diverse perspectives and experiences.

PAINTED NAILS IN SOLIDARITY

Our next Drag Gospel Sunday with Momma Ashley Rose is on July 30! In support of our Drag Queen siblings, there’s an opportunity to paint our fingernails on July 30! Come with your nails painted, or get them painted before worship. If you have any nail polish you would like to donate, bring it next Sunday, July 23. We will also have nail polish remover available for those who only want to keep their nails painted while at Allendale.

Happy 100th Birthday!!!

Marjorie Blackwelder Footlick was born in Lulu, Florida. She is one of 7 children born to Ciscero and Loney Blackwelder. Loney was visiting relatives in Lulu when she unexpectedly went into labor on July 21, 1923. Marjorie was delivered by her grandmothers and was so small they put her in a shoe box. She wasn’t expected to live. Marjorie was raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she met and married Harold Footlick. They had three sons and one daughter. Marjorie is a grandmother to six and a great-grandmother to nine. Marjorie loves children, and she would say the best time in her life was being a preschool teacher at Allendale UMC. She has been a member of Allendale UMC for decades. She enjoys baseball, gardening, and having family parties. She is known for her apple walnut coffee cake, lemon meringue pie, pot roast, chicken with yellow rice, and egg foo young. Marjorie currently lives with her daughter and son-in-law on a small farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she still works in the garden.

Jane Mann is reminded of Marjorie’s taking such good care of her son, Glen, as her first little one in the crib room! Glen would have been 46 this April.

Cards are welcome: 163 Pugh Rd NW, Riner, VA 24149
