The Bellringer: Ringing against Injustice

Saturday, February 3, 2024

Dear friend,

Join us this Sunday, February 4 at 10:30 AM for a special service that ties together themes from Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” with words and music. Through these words, we imagine the Divine not as a distant figure, but as an intimate presence within and around us, transcending traditional boundaries of race, gender, and form. This literary exploration challenges us to see the sacred worth in all people and the world, echoing our welcome statement’s affirmation that everyone is a beloved child of God, deserving of love and acceptance without exclusion.

Through Celie’s journey from pain to empowerment, and her conversations with Shug about the nature of God and love, we are inspired to foster a community that celebrates diversity, questions injustice, and seeks to heal wounds inflicted by exclusion and prejudice. This service is an act of solidarity, a declaration that we stand with the marginalized and the oppressed, and a reaffirmation of our commitment to building a sanctuary where the love of God is manifested in our love for each other.

Your story matters too. We honor the sacredness in each other’s stories but also commit to being active participants in the ongoing work of liberation and reconciliation, embodying the inclusive love of Christ in our daily lives.

Gas Plant Redevelopment

Faith in Florida is calling on you to join for a mass mobilization to City Hall on February 6th, 2024. An official council of community members will be listening to comments from residents like us and then voting “yes” or “no” on whether City Council should allow the current redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District. To build a new Rays baseball stadium, the city is handing out hundreds of millions in our taxes to a developer while refusing to promise us the things we need from this project: truly affordable housing, green practices, and restorative justice to all the black folks and working families displaced from our city. You can help us make it clear to them that right now, what the people need is housing and economic opportunities for all!
